We would like to introduce the newest addition to the family- Miss Mckenna Rose Harvie! She was born on Monday, February 28th at 2:41 pm. She weighed 6 lbs. 10 oz. and was 19 inches in length.
So, how did it all go down? These details are really just for me so stop reading here if you don't want all the guts and glory. Last Sunday, I was admitted into the hospital where they did a procedure to soften the cervix. After waiting 6 hours, the induction began. This is not a fun process when you are induced a week early (before the body is ready for labor). With gestational diabetes, I don't have an option. I must be induced at 39 weeks. At 10:30 pm, they started the pitocin and my body SLOWLY started to respond. When I say slowly, I am not kidding. There was virtually no progression overnight. My AMAZING doctor came to check in on me around 6:30 am and still, not much was happening. It was at that point that he broke my water. About 3 to 4 hours later, as the contractions began to get closer together and the pain starting to increase, I got my epidural.
Now, this was the part I was most anxious about. I mean, who wants a giant needle in their back? I faced all my irrational fears (yes, I even worried the needle would paralyze me) and went through with it. My dad even promised me a very fancy pink wheelchair if I need it after the procedure but guess what folks... I AM WALKING!!! :-)
Well, the one thing I never worried about regarding the epidural is something called a WINDOW. This means that in some cases, the epidural has a window where the pain can't be blocked with the medication. I was one of the lucky ones who was fortunate enough to feel everything on my right side. HOLY HANNAH!!! It was painful! The good news? It went very fast from here on out. When the Anesthesiologist came back in to fix the epidural, Little Miss Mckenna was here! Yep! Only 3 pushes and she was in our world. Must be my muscular abs! :-)
This past week has been a whirlwind. Trying to juggle a very busy 19 month old boy and a newborn has been nothing short of exhausting. Lucky for us, we have had lots of help! What am I going to do when all of that help goes back to work??? Guess "I won't think about that now, I will think about that tomorrow."
